Context

Developing Internal Engineering Talent to Meet the Demands of Modern Insurance

A Fortune 50 insurance company, facing growing technology demands and a competitive talent market, sought to develop software engineers from within. The goal was to create a program designed to:

  • Address software engineering talent shortages
  • Improve employee retention and engagement
  • Reduce reliance on external hiring

The internal stakes were high, and the company turned to Galvanize to create a clear, structured pathway for employees to gain in-demand engineering skills while retaining the engagement and contributions that stemmed from their existing cultural alignment and valuable institutional knowledge.

Our Approach

Collaborate

Galvanize partnered with HR and technology leaders to define success criteria and ensure alignment with business objectives, hiring expectations, and engineering standards.

Translate

Through discovery sessions with technical stakeholders, Galvanize designed a 22-week immersive program combining assessment, live instruction, and hands-on labs. The curriculum would ensure employees – many without prior technical experience – could transition into software engineering roles aligned with the company’s modernization goals.

Innovate

Expert instructors delivered the training remotely, serving as mentors throughout. Participants engaged full-time in applied learning, culminating in a capstone project demonstrating their engineering readiness.

Validate

Candidate selection began with an aptitude and pair-programming assessment. During training, regular progress reviews ensured steady advancement. The final capstone presentation to leadership validated both technical proficiency and workplace readiness.

Impact

The reskilling initiative has become a cornerstone of the company’s workforce strategy, with the majority of program graduates accepting positions as software engineers. Several years in, many graduates have advanced to more senior roles as lead software engineers, data engineers, and technology managers.

  • Graduates are now emerging as leaders within the engineering organization
  • 99% of graduates are in IT roles, combining preexisting business insight with newly trained technical skills
  • 10% of all current entry-level software engineers are program graduates

Client Voice
