What does a day in your shoes look like?
I'm an entrepreneur who works from home/Galvanize with 3 kids (including one infant). So my day starts early, as the kids are up and ready to hang by 6:30am at the latest. I like to spend the early morning hours with my kids, since they're in great moods and I haven't had my coffee yet. After coffee and breakfast, its emails and tackling my biggest task of the day.
The rest of the day is helping other entrepreneurs think through hairy HR issues and running operations for my team. I get a lunch break, either with clients, team members, or if I'm lucky most days its with the kids again. Back at it through the afternoon and then I help make dinner (cooking is one of my favorite things), bath time, story time, then lights out for the kids. I get that magical time after kids are asleep to hang with my wife before we pack it in for the night and start over again.
What was your "breakthrough" moment when you realized the opportunity in front of you?
I was working in a law firm and super unhappy. I found no joy in what I was doing there. All my joy was found away from the firm. I was in the middle of earning my MBA in the evenings, waiting to finish it before I jumped ship. Thankfully, I woke up and realized I didn't need the MBA to leave the firm and do something exciting. So I did, I never looked back, and I am so so happy that I did.
What inspired you to start HRPivot?
I spent a lot of time at the law firm working with business owners who were their own bosses and making real money and real change in the world. I didn't want to spend my life helping other people do cool stuff. I wanted to be one of the guys doing the cool stuff.
The idea for HRPivot came from our frustrations working with HR departments that lacked metrics, strategy, and value. We thought small and mid-sized businesses deserved a better return on investment for every dollar spent towards HR. So we set out to create a better service model that would give startups and entrepreneurs the help they need and get back their most precious resource - Time.
What is your favorite technology tool or application to use at work?
I love dapulse. We use the project management tool to stay on top of projects and communicate status with clients. It's great.
What book are you currently reading?
I'm re-reading the Harry Potter series! Currently in the middle of Chamber of Secrets.
What music are you currently listening to?
Seems like all I get to hear is Kidz Bop these days.
What is your favorite lunch spot in Phoenix?
A recent favorite has been Mother Bunch Brewing. Great spot for an afternoon beer and co-founders meeting.

Parting words for future entrepreneurs, leaders, or creators?
Take the leap. Even if you have small kids, do it. They won't remember the year they got one set of blocks to share as a Christmas present or eating loads of spaghetti because its super cheap. They WILL remember that their mom or dad was happy, energized, and doing something with purpose.
