Data Engineering


Similar to our other programs, you will be sent a take-home challenge after applying. This assessment will include questions in Java, SQL, and calculating the size of a cluster. A resume is required to apply as well. A technical interview with a Galvanize faculty member will follow based on your performance in the take-home, and will focus on Java and operating systems experience.

If you have applied for the Nvent scholarship, you will be interviewed by Nvent in addition to the other steps in the admissions process.

For the Data Engineering program, we are looking for students with experience in java development, linux, unix. Over half of our Data Science students have an advanced degree, and we expect similar backgrounds for the Data Engineering class. Software engineers and developers are encouraged to apply.

Nvent is sponsoring 8 full scholarships to this course in return for a commitment to work for Nvent following the program. When you apply, you can indicate your interest in the scholarship. Scholarship applicants will have an employment interview with Nvent, and will then continue the admissions process with Galvanize.

If you apply but are declined for the Nvent scholarship, you can still continue with your application to the data engineering program.

The Data Engineering Immersive is an intensive program that runs 12 weeks, full-time. It covers data architecture, scalable machine learning, distributed systems, and will also cover big data technologies like Hive, Spark, and Mapreduce. Students complete 8 weeks of intense structured curriculum, solving problems with real data from industry partners and picking up the practical skills that hiring partners care about. The course also includes 2.5 weeks to complete the capstone projects and 1 week for interview coaching and introductions to partner companies.
Galvanize Data Engineering will teach students how to set up efficient and scalable data infrastructure and pipelines that can store, analyze, and extract valuable insights from data. Students will learn technologies like Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, Storm, HBase, Solr, Cloud Computing, and Lambda Architectures.
A typical day begins at 9:30am with a short quiz to test your knowledge of previous concepts introduced in the course. Instruction begins at 10am with a lecture introducing the day’s topic and theory. For the rest of the morning you will be working through a hands-on exercise where concepts from lecture will be applied. The afternoon follows a similar pattern to the morning by beginning with a lecture that dives deeper into the day’s topic. The rest of the day you will be pair programming with another student to complete a longer and more in depth exercise.

Occasionally there will be a guest speaker or lecturer presenting during lunch or at the end of the day to provide insight into what a day in the life of a practicing data engineer is like or to cover a specialized topic not covered in the standard curriculum.

For Data Science and Data Engineering, Mac Mini work stations will be provided in the classroom for pairing exercises. They are also available to use for individual assignments, although most students use their own machines for their capstone project. Students do not keep the Mac Minis at the end of the program. Laptops are not required for Data Science or Data Engineering but should you plan on purchasing a new one, we suggest using a Macbook.
By the end of the program you will be able to effectively use the Hadoop ecosystem and modern open source data storage, transfer, and ETL tools in Java. The program culminates with a personal capstone project focused on synthesizing the core concepts learned throughout the course which you will present at our Capstone Showcase to companies looking to hire developers.
Absolutely! We encourage you to reapply and continue to study and prepare in the meantime. Your Admissions Officer will provide you feedback and study materials. It’s a good idea to also attend Galvanize events and workshops to brush up on your skills.
