When Raj Kadiyala started exploring data science programs, something caught his eye. A New York Times article covering the surge of tech boot camps noted two success stories: a barista and a math major who changed careers –– and their lives –– with a Galvanize education.
“Until then, I didn’t realize that people from such varied backgrounds could find success with technology careers,” says Raj.
He was also impressed by the relative speed of a boot camp education: “If I were to go back to school to study data science, it would take me at least two years to get an MBA. With Galvanize, I can accomplish more in three months.”
Life before Data Science
Raj grew up in a small town in India, and moved to the US when he was 19. He was awarded a full scholarship at Texas A&M University, where he earned a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering and a Master’s in Aerospace Engineering,
Raj spent the next nine and a half years working in the oil and gas industry, but found the job less than fulfilling.
“I did oil and gas for a long time, and I really wasn’t satisfied with the work. For me, it was a natural choice to look into tech, into a startup scene that let me control my own schedule and spend more time with my family”.
After a little research, Raj found Galvanize, where high placement rates and satisfied students were the norm. He applied to the three month Data Science Immersive (DSI) program, and hasn’t looked back since.
Boot Camp and Beyond
Raj’s experience in the DSI program taught him much more than a new skillset. “I gained an incredible level of technical knowledge, but also a great introduction to fellow data scientists who happen to be smart, amazing people –– people I want to continue working with.”
Now, Raj is the Sr. Data Scientist Consultant at Tectonic, a premier provider of Big Data Analytics services and trainings. He came to Galvanize passionate about changing his career, and graduated with the skills to transform his life.
